STEM challenge- making a car

The challenge today in groups of 3 and 4 was to make a car that moves out of card, cellotape and straws.  Some inspirational planning, challenges ahead and team work helped them to succeed.  We focused on behaviours that occur with challenges and how we work through these.  These learning tasks are helping Room 13 to understand the value of "how to learn", "processes with go through when learning" and "what learning is".

STEM challenges

This year we are presenting the students with challenges using very little materials.  The process involves, discussions, problem solving, building resilience, team work and perseverance within a group.  They have had opportunities so far to use tinfoil to make a boat that floats and sails, tin foil to make a person that is free standing and tinfoil and stick to make a stand that can hold a tennis ball.  Lots of successes and failures in a safe environment.

first few weeks of term 4

What  a great start to the term.  We have been doing some science and learning about physical and chemical changes through experiments.  this has involved freezing and thawing ice, making playdough and pizzas.  On top of this we had a chance to participate in ice skating, which the students enjoyed immensely.  check out the photos below.
